In August 2003, video game web site IGN.com commented that "The Dead To Rights demo is a [sic] impressive piece of work," in their article "A Sneak Peek at Gamescom." In a preview by IGN.com, in October 2003, it was commented that "Dead To Rights is a stylish and gripping beat 'em up." In January 2004, Greg Kasavin of GameSpot also commented on the intensity of the combat in Dead To Rights 2 when he wrote that "your character’s attacks all have a great weight and impact behind them," in his article about Getaway. Dead To Rights was also the first game to implement the RenderWare, which is used in many games today including "God of War", "Halo 2", "Kameo", "Splinter Cell", "F.E.A.R.", and many others. On March 31, 2004, two months after its initial retail release, Dead To Rights 2 was re-released for Microsoft Windows at a reduced price of $29.95 USD only during the period between April 9 and July 10, 2005, as Dead To Rights 2: Limited Edition. The Limited Edition included the game, a bonus DVD that included "Dead To Rights" voice acting excerpts, a comic book drawn by Nate Simpson, and a reversible cover sleeve. The sequel came out in the following formats: Dead To Rights 2 was reviewed in several publications by many different reviewers. The game received an average rating of 80/100 from Metacritic. GameSpot gave the game an 8.5/10; GameSpy gave it an 8.0; IGN gave it an 8.2; and WorthPlaying gave it 4/5 stars (although WorthPlaying's review was not friendly).
